Nix

Nix (Nykurin in Faroese) is a creature that lives somewhere at the bottom of Lake Sørvágsvatn and comes ashore from time to time among the people. It can take many forms, e.g. grazes by the lake like a beautiful and calm horse, and because of his charisma, he attracts your attention, and you want to ride him. Once you touch it, however, you can no longer detach yourself from it and it will take you to the bottom of the lake, there to itself.

But if you’re on a tight leash, just say his name, his miraculous ability to chain you to himself will disappear and you’ll be saved. Or so the legend goes.

As of 2017, an artistic rendition of Nix by Faroese artist Pol Skarðenni commemorates this legend.
