Struve’s geodetic arc

The northernmost point of Struve’s geodetic arc can be found right here in Hammerfest.

Struve’s geodetic arc is a set of stones, points, embedded in the ground. There are 265 of these in total and they line up along approximately 25. parallel from Hammerfest to the delta of the Danube River. Thanks to these points, scientists in 1858 were able to measure the distance from the meridian to the centre of the earth. At that time, the scientists arrived at the result of 6,378,360 metres. The difference between the measurement at that time and the current measurement using modern technology is only 270 metres.
